Thirty-six hours remained when Mara noticed the car.
It was a black sedan, unremarkable in every way, parked across the street from her apartment. She would not have noticed it at all except that it had been there when she left for coffee at 6 AM, and it was still there when she returned at 6:47. Nobody sat in a parked car for forty-seven minutes in this neighborhood without a reason.
She did not go home. Instead, she walked three blocks to the Metro station, bought a burner phone from the convenience store on the platform level, and called the only person she trusted completely: her former roommate, Dani Okafor, who now worked in cybersecurity for a firm that had nothing to do with government contracts.
"I need a clean laptop and a place to work for twenty-four hours," Mara said without preamble. "No questions."
"That is already a question's worth of suspicious," Dani replied. "But yes. Come to the office. Third floor is empty for renovation. I will leave the side door unlocked."
Mara took three different trains and a bus. She doubled back twice. The sedan did not follow — or if it did, it was better at this than she was. By the time she reached Dani's building, it was past noon. Thirty hours left.
She set up in an empty conference room with the laptop Dani had left, along with a thermos of coffee and a sticky note that read: Whatever this is, be careful. And delete my number from that phone when you are done.
Mara plugged in the USB drive and began to write the story that would either save her career or end her life. She was increasingly unsure which.
