Kade worked the drowned levels, where the old city sat beneath forty meters of green water and older secrets. Corporations had abandoned the lower archives when the seas rose, sealing decades of data in waterlogged vaults, and people like Kade dove for the fragments that survived. Tonight's job was strange even by his standards: a client would pay triple to recover a single memory-file, then triple again if he swore never to view it. He should have said no. But the coordinates led to a server farm that officially never existed, and curiosity had always been the crack in his professional armor. Forty meters down, breathing recycled air in the neon dark, he found the file intact—and his own name attached to it, in a timestamp from a night he could not remember living. His light flickered across the drowned corridor. Somewhere above, the client was waiting to be told the job was done. Kade floated in the cold, the file pulsing in his palm, and made the mistake he'd been paid not to make. He opened it.
