Welcome, adventurers. The kingdom of Valdren has no king. Old Aldric the Third died without naming an heir, and the royal crown—an artifact said to bind the loyalty of the land itself—was shattered into five shards in the chaos that followed. Each shard has scattered to a different corner of the realm: one to the drowned crypts beneath the capital, one to the frost-witch of the northern peaks, one lost in the Merchant Quarter's endless card games, one clutched by a dragon who fancies itself a philosopher, and one—troublingly—inside the body of a man who does not yet know he swallowed it. Your party meets, as parties do, in a tavern: a sellsword nursing a grudge, a cleric who has lost her faith, a thief with a map she can't read, and whoever else answers the call. A hooded stranger slides a contract across the table. Recover the shards. Reforge the crown. Decide, when the time comes, whose brow it will rest upon. The pay is a kingdom's gratitude. The risk is a kingdom's wrath. Roll for initiative—the tavern door has just burst open, and the first of the five heirs' agents has come looking for you.
