The realtor called it "characterful" and looked away when she said it. The Aldous house had stood empty for thirty years, and the moment the Verrick family crossed the threshold, they understood why. The air smelled of a birthday cake none of them had baked. In the parlor, a woman none of them could see hummed a lullaby that stopped the instant they entered. By the third night, the memories had grown bolder. Small Tomas described the man who tucked him in—tall, kind, wearing a coat from another century. The mother found herself weeping at the kitchen sink over a grief that was not hers. The house did not haunt them, exactly. It remembered, and it wanted to be remembered back. On the seventh morning they found a new photograph on the mantel: the four of them, smiling, dated forty years hence. None of them recalled it being taken. The house, it seemed, remembered things that had not happened yet.
