The figure did not wait for her to reach the village edge. By the time Mira slipped through the back gate — the one with the broken latch that her mother had never fixed — the cloaked stranger was already moving, their amber lantern bobbing through the grey dawn like a will-o-wisp. Mira followed. She did not call out. Something told her that silence was required here, that this was a test she was already taking. They walked for an hour through the dead forest — trees like bones, ground like ash, sky like a wound that refused to heal. The compass around her neck pulled steadily forward, its needle aligned with the stranger's path. Whatever she needed most, it was ahead. The stranger stopped at the edge of a ravine. Below, a river ran — but not with water. It flowed with liquid color, streams of blue and green and gold braiding together in the grey landscape like veins of life in dead stone. Mira had never seen anything so beautiful. She had never seen blue before, not truly, and the sight of it made her eyes burn with tears she did not understand. "You can see it," the stranger said. Their voice was old — not aged, but ancient, carrying the weight of centuries. They lowered their hood. Beneath was a face that might have been any age, any gender, with eyes that burned the same amber as their lantern. As Mira's blood. "What is it?" Mira whispered. "What remains. The last river of magic in a world that has been drained nearly dry." They turned to face her fully. "And you, child, are the last person alive who can replenish it. The last Ember." The compass needle spun once, then pointed straight down — into the ravine, into the river of color, into whatever waited below.
