Kael knelt and pressed his palm flat against the earth. The ground was warm — not sun-warm, but alive-warm, like the flank of a sleeping animal. The compass needle trembled, pointing straight down into whatever lay beneath. "What is the Maw?" he asked the fox. "A door. The oldest one. It was sealed before your kind learned to write, and it has been trying to open itself ever since." The fox paused at a fork in the path. "Your map will show you the way. Whether you should follow it is another matter entirely." Kael unrolled the map. New ink was spreading across the parchment — not the careful lines of geography this time, but something else. Symbols. They spiraled outward from a central point, forming a pattern he almost recognized. Almost. "These are words," he said slowly. "In a language I cannot read." "Not yet. The map teaches as it reveals. By the time you reach the Maw, you will read them. Whether you will wish you could is the question the last cartographer answered incorrectly." The fox turned left at the fork. Kael followed. The trees grew denser, their phosphorescent moss brighter, until the forest floor was lit in pale blue like moonlight on snow. And ahead, barely visible through the undergrowth, something glinted — metal, old and dark, set into the earth like a monument to a forgotten war. It was a door. Iron-bound, covered in the same spiraling symbols as his map, standing upright in the middle of the forest with no wall around it. Just a door, alone, leading nowhere and everywhere. The compass needle was spinning now.
