The relay station drifted at the edge of the Vela Deep, where nothing had spoken in centuries. Rena had worked the silence for six years, trading loneliness for good pay and a view of the dark. So when the console chimed—an actual signal, coherent and clean—she assumed a malfunction. The source was Halcyon, a star catalogued as extinct a thousand years before her birth. The message was not code. It was a heartbeat, slow and vast, and beneath it a single repeating phrase in a language the translator refused to render, flagging it only as older than the archive itself. Rena's hands hovered over the reply key. Protocol said to report and wait. But the heartbeat was slowing, as if whatever sent it had waited a millennium for someone to finally be listening, and was now, at last, letting go. She keyed the microphone. "I hear you," she said. "I'm here."
